5/24/2023 0 Comments Saidiya hartman wayward![]() ![]() You would be hard-pressed to find contemporary radical black thought that is not the inspiration for or confirmation of her literary offerings. ![]() Her 1997 book, Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-making in Nineteenth-century America, brought whole discourses into being with her urgent and expansive analysis of humanism, empathy and ‘the encumbrance of freedom’ for black people. The brilliance of Hartman’s work is in its wayward reach throughout the diaspora, its dedication to storying black life in relation to specific histories of transatlantic enslavement. How to honour the soft liquid rigour, the sharp vast tenderness, of a writer like Saidiya Hartman? Or, how might we honour any black woman, in all their loud unlovely nuance and careful wholeness? It is hard to review a book of such gravitas and importance a text that refuses the boundaries we were meant to exist within. ![]() ![]() Instead, and for four times, there was an American black athlete on the podium being photographed by Hitlers personal photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann. Honestly, it feels like these books just get better as they go, and I was so excited to pick this one up and give it a read. It’s also the third novel in the Pandava Quintet, of which I’ve already read and reviewed the first two. Yang Pao's actions as a fictional character reveal much about how West Indian men view women in general. It helps to put history in a whole new light.A good example of this is Yang Pao's marriage to Fay Wong and his rejection of Gloria, the prostitute that he fell in love with in the beginning of Young's novel. ![]() There's nothing like comparing history and cultural experiences through literature. It's not a far stretch of the imagination to visualise readers taking the plunge, after reading it, to explore Gloria, the prequel to Pao, and then one of Amy Tan's novels like The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife or The Bonesetter's Daughter, all books about the Chinese-American experience. Take, for instance, Pao by Kerry Young, our current Sunday Arts Section (SAS) Book Club choice.Pao is a light, entertaining Jamaican novel that allows readers to explore Chinese and West Indian history while understanding the role of Chinese immigration in the Caribbean. ![]() A book can lead you in a thousand directions. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The very lonely firefly board book![]() But it is not until it discovers other fireflies that it finds exactly what it's looking for-a surprise sure to bring smiles to anyone who turn the final page! The actors and actresses in the movie were doing good jobs with their given roles, and it was a great treat to have the original cast return to play their characters once again. Lots of details, vivid colors and memorable characters. And it was nice to see the beloved characters from the first movie return, and also to see the amazing job that the special effects team pulled off at bringing the world to life. The effects in "Alice: Through the Looking Glass" were great, as they also were in the previous movie. ![]() It is a good movie in itself, and works quite well as a stand-alone, if you will. "Alice: Through the Looking Glass" is not a bad movie, it just seems like a movie that hardly was necessary to have been made. Why?
